Sheehan's steak and seafood restaurant

Tonight we decided to try Sheehan's evening menu. my husband had been there for the all day breakfast before but I had never visited the place, just heard great things from different people. One of my friends even made the very bold claim that she had had the best steak of her whole life there. So this i had to try. The decor is very quaint, full of cute little homely sayings, such as ''beware chocolate shrinks your clothes.''Little touches like this I find make the place instantly more homely. There are a number of tables down stairs and also the possibility to sit 20 upstairs. We had not booked but they were very good and let us have a table all the same.  You get a choice of two menus Rob chose the 18.50 menu and had the soup of the day which was aubergine and a chicken burger for the main. Of course I had to try both just so i could write about them. The soup was very flavorsome and in no way over seasoned like i often find with homemade soups. A lot of chefs i think, believe they can disguise tastelessness with salt, but this soup was incredible! aubergine is one of my favorite veg. I always find getting rid of its bitterness to be a challenge but this was not the case with this soup.

The chicken burger came in a nice bap bun, the bacon was high quality and the chicken and sauce used looked like a good bit of thought was put into it. I hate ordering burgers out. I cannot stand it when places just use buns without thinking of the bun meat sauce ratio and they disintegrate in your hand and its all mushy and horrible. This was not the case someone obviously spent time in the creation of this sublime chicken burger and made a taste explosion between the right two buns.
This came with home-made chips, perfectly hot and crispy as chips should be.

I chose the 21.95 meal with 5e supplement for the 8 oz steak. Lets begin with the starter. I chose the crispy fried brie. I adore cheese and fried cheese all the more. I have however had strange experiences with this as a starter some places use huge chunks of brie and well, they just congeal and are far too heavy for human consumption. Others use filo pastry which can be very nice but i rather a thin bread crumb. In Sheehans I believe they used panko bread crumbs(Japanese style) they where incredibly light and fluffy and not overly fatty as often can be the case with deep fried cheese. The onion marmalade was nice and chunky but i think i wold have preferred a little more bite in it. The rocket salad accompanied it all very well.

Now after my friend suggested she had had the best steak of her life , I of course had to try it. The 8oz fillet steak came with onion rings chips and garlic butter. The steak was cooked blue which is my preference. Getting chefs to actually cook a steak blue is often difficult in Ireland but in this case my steak was perfect. I would not go as far as to say the best steak of my life but easily top 20 and definitely an incredible find in Waterford for price and quality.

Ive talked about the food and decor but i haven't mentioned the service. the 3 waitresses where absolutely lovely they seemed like they where enjoying working there. They could have a laugh with the customers and they where well able to control the room and ensure everything was done fast and reliably. We where too full to try a desert but the list of sweet things was varied and interesting. the portions where not skimpy either.

We will definitely be back. I am even contemplating waking Rob up and going for that all day breakfast he told me about. Good food great value and lovely staff. Could not ask for more!
